The inter-disciplinary cultural studies approach focuses on Japan in the context of East Asia, rather than in isolation. Classes on modernity, post-modernity and aesthetics are conducted using various disciplines including philosophy, literature, and linguistics to develop a comparative and diversified perspective. Area studies is approached both geographically and historically by providing courses which helps students gain a broad-ranging, cosmopolitan knowledge of Japan, East Asia, and the world. The complex social phenomena, both current and historical, will be critically examined by the social sciences approach, using contemporary theoretical and empirical discussions from an array of fields including politics, international relations, economics, sociology, and legal studies.

International Program on Environmental Sciences

This program integrates arts and sciences to conduct multi-faceted research on the complex problem of the environment. In addition to environmental policy, ethics and law, students also study topics such as the protection of biodiversity, the geochemical cycle, and geophysics from the viewpoint of state-of-the-art technology and engineering. By approaching global environmental problems from a variety of perspectives, the program aims to contribute to the establishment and development of a sustainable society. To this end, in this program we aim to foster a wide range of human resources with a solid grounding in both arts and sciences by providing an integrated curriculum that encompasses the natural sciences as well as the humanities and social sciences.
